That tower was blown up by Russian troops in World War I; it was replaced by a temporary tower and then by the present lighthouse in 1920. The lighthouse was automated in 1961 and converted to wind power in 1986.

  • I scale a handy navigation mark to photograph ships passing Ledskär Day Beacon off the tip of Lemland, Åland. It was the first -and last time- I used my 22 kg canoe to photograph in the open seas of the Baltic. After being caught unawares and suddenly surfing in the rip tides of a passing ship, I was lucky to make it back to shore intact and with dry equipment! From that point on, in 2002, I made the decision to buy a motorized boat.

  • On Västra Norrskär Island where Norrskär Lighthouse is situated, there is an amusing cluster of outhouses huddled together at a distance from their owner's cottages. Perhaps this is due to the prevailing winds which blow from the southwest.

  • Harmaja Lighthouse. Stone daybeacons were built on the island as early as the 1500s to guide arriving ships to the port of Helsinki. The original stone lighthouse proved to be too short, so in 1900 its lantern was removed and replaced by the cast iron tower which presently stands. The Helsinki pilot station and a tall communications tower also occupy the island about 6 km south of Helsinki.
